10 maths quiz ideas for Halloween
5 min readUpdated 18 September 2026
Halloween lands in the middle of the autumn term, right when a class needs a change of pace. A themed quiz keeps the maths honest while the pumpkins, bats and sweets do the motivating. Below are ten ideas, ordered roughly from Year 3 up to Year 9. Each comes with a prompt you can paste straight into the Quiz.ai composer to get a finished quiz, then play it live, set it as an assignment, print it, or let pupils practise on their own.
Three of the ideas come as ready-made quizzes you can open straight from this page: play them live, set them as an assignment, print them, or let pupils practise on their own.
A tip before you start: tell the assistant the year group and the objective you are actually teaching that week. The theme is decoration; the maths should match your plan.
1. Sweet-bag arithmetic (Year 3 to 4)
Addition and subtraction within 1,000, dressed up as trick-or-treat hauls. "Amara collected 148 sweets and gave 63 to her brother. How many are left?" works far better than a bare column sum.
Prompt: Make a 10-question Halloween quiz for Year 3 on adding and subtracting three-digit numbers. Every question is about sweets collected while trick-or-treating. Include two questions that need regrouping across the tens.
Or skip the prompt and use this one straight away:
2. Pumpkin-patch multiplication (Year 4)
Times-table fluency with a story. Rows of pumpkins, crates of apples, packs of glow sticks. Mix the tables you are securing, and include a few missing-factor questions.
Prompt: Create a 12-question quiz for Year 4 on the 6, 7 and 8 times tables, all set in a pumpkin patch. Include three missing-factor questions like "? × 7 = 56".
3. Spooky fractions of amounts (Year 5)
Fractions of quantities are a classic stumbling block. "A witch has 24 potions and uses 3/8 of them" gives pupils a reason to draw the bar model.
Prompt: Write a 10-question quiz for Year 5 on finding fractions of amounts, Halloween themed (potions, bats, cauldrons). Use unit and non-unit fractions and keep every answer a whole number.
4. Haunted-house area and perimeter (Year 5 to 6)
Floor plans of a haunted house, rooms with given dimensions, a fence around the graveyard. Ask for the perimeter of compound shapes, not only rectangles, so the quiz has some bite.
Prompt: Make an 8-question quiz for Year 6 on area and perimeter of rectangles and compound rectilinear shapes. Every question is a room or garden in a haunted house. Use metres and give all dimensions in the question text.
Ready-made, including two compound shapes:
5. Costume-shop percentages (Year 6 to 7)
Percentage of an amount and simple percentage change. Discounts on costumes on 31 October, a shop that raises prices by 20% the week before.
Prompt: Create a 10-question Halloween quiz for Year 7 on percentages: finding 10%, 25%, 5% and 15% of an amount, plus three percentage-decrease questions about costume-shop discounts. Prices in pounds.
6. Ghost-count data handling (Year 6 to 7)
A bar chart of costumes worn at a party, a table of sweets by house, mean and range of scores in a pumpkin-carving contest. Data questions work well with a picture, and Quiz.ai can add a chart to a question when the data is in the question.
Prompt: Make a 10-question quiz for Year 6 on reading bar charts and tables and finding the mean and range. Theme: a Halloween party with costume counts and pumpkin-carving scores. Put the data in a table in each question.
7. Cauldron ratios (Year 7 to 8)
Ratio and proportion as potion recipes. "The recipe uses eyeballs to slime in the ratio 2 : 5. The witch has 35 ml of slime." Scale recipes up and down and share amounts in a given ratio.
Prompt: Write a 10-question quiz for Year 8 on ratio: simplifying ratios, sharing an amount in a ratio, and scaling a recipe. Every question is a potion recipe in a cauldron.
8. Bat-cave negative numbers (Year 7)
Temperatures in a bat cave, floors below ground in a crypt, a ghost's bank balance. Ordering, adding and subtracting negatives with a story that explains why the numbers go below zero.
Prompt: Create a 12-question quiz for Year 7 on negative numbers: ordering, adding and subtracting, and finding differences between temperatures. Theme: temperature readings inside a bat cave across one Halloween night.
9. Graveyard sequences and nth term (Year 8 to 9)
Tombstones in rows that grow by a fixed amount, candles that double each night. Linear sequences with the nth term for most questions, one or two geometric sequences for stretch.
Prompt: Make a 10-question quiz for Year 9 on sequences: continuing linear sequences, finding the nth term, and two questions on doubling patterns. Use Halloween scenes such as rows of tombstones and candles lit each night.
10. Zombie-outbreak probability (Year 8 to 9)
Probability from a sweet bowl (with and without replacement for the brave), expected outcomes, and simple tree diagrams. This is the one to save for the last lesson before half term.
Prompt: Write a 10-question quiz for Year 9 on probability: single events from a bowl of mixed sweets, expected frequency, and two questions using a tree diagram for two picks with replacement. Halloween themed, answers as fractions in simplest form.
Here it is, ready to play:
Running it in class
- Live game. Open the quiz, choose Live, and let the class join on their phones with the code on the board. Speed scoring makes even fractions competitive.
- Assignment. Choose Assignment and send the link as homework. Attempts are marked against the answer key and you get a results page per pupil.
- Pen & Paper. Print the worksheet with the answer key on a separate page for cover lessons.
- Practice. Pupils revising alone can practise on their own, hiding the answers and checking each one as they go.
If a question is too easy or too hard, reply to the assistant in the chat panel: "make questions 4 and 7 harder" or "replace question 9 with a bar-model question". Every edit stays in the same quiz.
Happy Halloween, and may your regrouping always carry.
